Set Google Chrome as Default Browser on Ubuntu Linux

Google Chrome is getting more and more browser market share but Firefox is still the default browser in Linux Ubuntu. If you are using Google Chrome and want it to be your default browser in Ubuntu. Follow this method to make Chrome as your primary browser in Ubuntu Lucid.

  • Go to System > Preferences > Preferred Applications in Ubuntu Lucid and under the ‘Internet tab‘ select ‘Google Chrome‘ under Browsers (from the drop down list).

Close the Window and you are done. In case if you have not found Google Chrome in drop down menu (even after installing Chrome on your system), select ‘Custom’ from the drop down menu and enter the code /opt/google/chrome/chrome in the command field.

Thie method also works for Opera or any other browser that you want to set as default broswer on Ubuntu Linux.
