List of Best URL Shrinkers

Social networking or microblogging sites (Twitter and Plurk etc) have strict character limits per message so users find it difficult to share long URLs in their messages. On other hand people love to click on a short URL rather than long ones. Some affiliates also need to mask their affiliate links. In all these situations URL shortening services help them out. Some URL shrinking services also offer handy statistics (like how many times URL was clicked).

Here is a list of popular URL shrinkers

  • TinyURL

  • TineyURL creates small URL from the larger ones that a users supplies. The main advantage is the shorten URL never expires. Its very popular so when you send it in a mail or twitter message, the readers know it’s a shorten URL(well most of them do).

  • Is.gd

  • Is.gd(pronounce it as “is good”) shrinks URL in 17 characters. So if you do not need statistics and other details about the URL and just need to send it over twitter or something use it and shrink the URL in just 17 characters.

  • Bit.ly

  • Bit.ly shrinks the URL into 20 character long URL. It has advanced functionality about shorten URL. You can see statistics (like how many visitors followed your shorten URL). If you are a Twitter fan, Bit.ly has an option to post to twitter directly from the site.

  • Cli.gs

  • Cli.gs has most features in them all. You can have click statistics (like Bit.ly ) and editing capabilities (like SnipURL). It has more statistics reporting option than in Bit.ly including world map of visitors and a nice graph of hits and even references on sites like Twitter.

  • SnipURL

SnipURL shorten the given URL in 24 characters. It provides the option to edit the long URL that short URL points to.

So do you use any of above? And why do you like any of these?

How do these people make money? I know they’re nice convenient services, but I just don’t see how they make money. They’re only redirecting to another web site and don’t usually capture eyeballs….right?
