There are many situations when you want to delete files which can not be deleted, you try different methods but an error message comes up and you are unable to delete certain files. The following methods will let you delete such files which are not possible to delete otherwise.

Command Prompt Method

Let us say a file “music.avi” does not get deleted. Open command prompt and leave it open, Close all other programs. Open Task Manager and end the process Explorer.exe. Do not close Task Manager, leave it open and go back to command prompt. Change the directory to where music.avi is saved (You do it using CD command in command prompt). After changing the directory type DEL in command prompt and press Enter, will be music.avi in this case. You are all done file is deleted.

KillBox Method

KillBox [Download] is a free software to delete files that are locked or in use (currently running error). There are four different ways to delete such files using Kill Box.

  • Copy file name, one at a time and paste it in the Combobox.
  • OR Copy an entire text file and use File->Paste from clipboard function to add all file names at once.
  • OR browse file name using browse function
  • OR drag and drop file from windows explorer to KillBox Combobox.

The above two methods can delete any file which you can not delete otherwise and come across an error. Using these methods you can easily delete any private data that is not deleted in simple way.

That looks like a nice program. I hate when I get that message, and use a program called “Unlocker” myself.

Hey, nice tips thanks :)
Safe mode is another method to delete undeletable files, or changing the extension of the file as well. As another tool you could use Hijackthis.

Cheers
