How To Change Drive Icons In Windows

February 21, 2009 · 5 comments

In this short tutorial I am going to show you how you can change the drive icon which displays in explorer with drive name. Changing these icons is possible and gives you an option to customize the drives (you want to display a media icon with the drive partition containing songs, films etc). Here are some simple steps to easily change drive icons in Windows XP, Vista etc.

  • First of all select a picture which you want to display with drive name and open it in Paint.
  • Now save this picture inside the drive for which you want to change the display picture (C:, D:, E: etc) by adding .ico after the name and save as BMP type.
  • Now open Notepad and write this two line code (in left picture, where Line 1=[Autorun] and Line2= icon=11.ico) in there (where “11.ico” is the name of the file that you saved) and save it in same drive where you saved the picture with following settings (as of right picture).
  • Now change the drive name (by right click and selecting Rename) of the drive in which you saved these two files.

You are done and now you will see the new icon of this drive which you just set.
