Gizmodo has shown Apple’s next iPhone to the world and received million of visits, plenty of back links, loads of fame and an official letter from Apple that the iPhone (prototype) they showed to the world was Apple’s property and it was either lost or stolen. Well, how Gizmodo got hold of this device?

Gizmodo side of story
Before going into Giz side of story, it was Engadget who first posted the device pictures along with a story that “apparently the phone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case“. They also hinted that the guy who owns this (lost/stolen) device is up for selling some hands-on time with the device. Engadget edited their post to remove this bit but Gizmodo got the clue and instead of paying to have some hands-on time with device, they bought the thing.
Gizmodo then ran a full story covering review, pictures, video and a look inside the device. Apple connected John gruber from Daring Fireball first hinted that Apple has lost iPhone prototype and they want it back.
Without going in much detail of features of this device, the Gizmodo story was sizzling hot on Internet since it was posted. Major tech blogs links and traffic, social media traffic, the fact that story was in trending topics at twitter and a big time buzz for Gizmodo and all that for $10,000 rumored price, not bad.

Apple Side of Story
John Gruber was first apple’s connected person who told the world that Apple has indeed lost an iPhone prototype and they are very interested to get it back at his blog Daring Fireball where he is now writing about Legal Implications of Gizmodo Buying a Stolen iPhone Prototype.
Apple has demanded back their iPhone prototype by calling Gizmodo and then writing an official letter which was sent through email by Bruce Sewell, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Apple. This story is definatly best breaking news on internet in 2010 so far and the amount of promotion Gizmodo has got taking risk of buying a stolen iPhone prototype for $10,000 is ten times worth it.
UPDATE: Gizmodo has received big time coverage on different tv stations including MSNBC, CNN, CBS, FOX News, abc and some other channels (total 7 coverages so far in one day), Checkout Gizmodo’s TV Coverage Page .

Nice new spin on PR’n the new iPhone from Apple. I think it’s all of Apple’s plan. Anyone want to take a shot at what Steve Jobs might say?
Well the guy who lost the phone is joking around on facebook, showing his phone number field as “lost” and his Location as “anywhere far from steve”
