Windows Vista is only version of Windows so far to include a non user-customizable startup sound. Changing this sound can not be done from control panel of Windows. You can instead follow these steps to change this sound to your own sound file.

  • Locate the file “imageres.dll” in vista’s system32 folder. For instance, C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll. Copy the file in another location (For example on desktop).
  • Download ResHacker.
  • Open ResHacker, open the file “imageres.dll” in ResHackeer.
  • Find the folder “WAVE” and expand everything below that.
  • Right click 1033 (could have different name depending on your local) and click replace resources. Click “open file with the new resources” and find the WAVE file you want to replace it with. Once you’re done, in Resource Type, type “WAVE“, in Resource Name type “5051″, and under Resource Language type “1033″ (or whatever number you have). Once done, click Replace.
  • Click FILE and then SAVE. Now you can copy this file to vista’s system32 folder.

You can keep “imageres.dll” file save to replace it later if you want.
